Francisco Segarra looked back to move forward. LEXUS ART CAR.

The Spanish vintage furniture manufacturer ‘looked back to move forward’ with his vision of the Lexus UX 250h Hybrid prototype, Cardo 61, reminiscent of the classics of the beginning of the last century with a “fresh, clean and forward-looking design”.

Known for its suggestive industrial facilities, Francisco Segarra has been selected along with six other artists to participate in Lexus Spain’s Lexus Art Car project and intervenes in the design of the vehicle to play with our perception of reality and attributes alternative roles to everyday objects. This time, Segarra has transformed a Lexus UX 250h Hybrid into a copy that invites the public to contemplate the design of the car, but also to enjoy an unforgettable driving experience.

Reflecting the functionality of our living environment, Francisco Segarra often uses design, art, or architecture methods to warp the objects around us and divert them from their original use. In the prototype for Lexus Art Car, the creative director of his eponymous firm reviews a branded object: Bolido 61.

“Less is more” is a popular quote used in design, but it is often not accurate. The Cardo 61 is larger, its style is more masculine, European, and classic, and it is much closer to the world of fashion, but its design, especially the exterior, embodies this minimalist philosophy. Its clean spruce-green surfaces are sculpted with reduced lines and carefully considered details, such as the double longitudinal stripe along the car and the number 61 on the sides, painted fenders and even the chrome front grille.

The principles of order, minimalism, and modernity are also magnified inside. The clean and clear cab is defined by its central panel, upholstered in camel leather topped with longitudinal seams, taking up the traditional Japanese sewing technique Sashiko.

A design that endorses lexus’ values: aerodynamics, elegance, robustness, power, and efficiency.

This idea of ‘looking back to move forward’ and combining the inspiration of an earlier aesthetic with future technology, allows us to show how excited we are with the proposal.

The Cardo 61 prototype is based on some of the most iconic and evocative car designs of all time to illustrate this excitement. A design that recovers the aesthetics of old racing cars combining the power of colour and shapes.
